Commonwealth Games: Weightlifter Nooh Dastagir Butt claims first gold medal for Pakistan
Weightlifter Nooh Dastagir Butt won the gold medal for Pakistan at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, winning a record 405 kg.
This is the first gold medal for Pakistan in all categories in the games taking place in the city of Birmingham in the UK. Previously, Hussain Shah won a bronze medal which is the first medal at the Games. However, Butt provided a highlight for Pakistan by winning the first gold medal.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Pakistan’s athlete for offering this moment of pride to Pakistan.
Nooh Dastagir Butt set another Commonwealth Games record by lifting 173 kg of snatch in the 109+kg category. Butt also set another record by lifting 232kg in clean and jerk. As a whole, he lifted 405kg – another CWG record.
New Zealand’s David Andrew won silver by lifting 394kg while India’s Singh Gurdeep managed to win bronze by lifting a total of 390kg.

Earlier, In the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Butt had got a bronze medal in the 105+kg category. In the same games, Talha Talib also claimed bronze in the 62kg category.
In 2006, Shujauddin Malik took Pakistan’s only gold medal in the 85 kg category in the CWG weightlifting event.
