As a result of heavy monsoon rains, many of the city’s private schools have decided to extend the summer holidays till August 9 as it would cover the heavy rainfall and Ashura.

Some other private schools even went one step further and said they will reopen on August 15 to also include Independence Day in their summer holidays. There was a lot of confusion about the decision. Some believed that schools complied with provincial government guidelines.

Meanwhile, according to the Sindh department of education, the summer holidays are due to officially end on 31 July with Monday 1 August as the first day of school. It did not share any notification with respect to extending holidays.

However, PSMA chairman Danish Uz Zaman clarified that the decision to extend summer vacations was made by some private schools only.

“No changes have been made during summer vacation at the government level. The private schools which will reopen on 15th August also include the chain of public schools of the army. But as PSMA follows the Sindh education department, we will reopen our schools on Monday as scheduled earlier. If the education department issues a new directive on this, we will definitely comply,” he concluded.
