Met department warns of ‘flashflood’ for major cities

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted flash floods in many cities as a new pre-monsoon rain system is expected to kick off on June 15.

According to a notification issued by the Met Department, “moist currents in the Arabian Sea are likely to enter the upper parts of the country starting on 1 June.”

“Heavy falls are expected in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura on 16th and 17th June that may generate urban flooding in Rawalpindi Lahore,” the advisory reads.

Thunderstorms in northern countries, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir, could damage infrastructure in those regions.

The department also cautions against landslides in Azad Kashmir, GB, and upper KP.

Flash floods will also break out in Baluchoistan’s cities of Naseerabad, Jaffarabad, Jhal Magsi, Harnai, Sibbi, and Bolan.

Storm, rainfall in most parts of the country

The met department said the new system of rain, and wind storms would enter AJK, GB, KP, Punjab, and Balochistan starting from June 15. These zones will receive heavy rains till the system cools down by 23 June.

In the AJK, heavy rains are expected in Bhimber, Kotli, Mirpur, Poonch, Bagh Haveli, Hattian, Muzaffarabad Neelum Valley, while Ghizer, Gilgilgilt, Diamir, Hunza, and Skardu would also receive precipitation from 1st to 23rd June.

Punjab

Rain, windy showers with little heavy rain are expected in Islamabad Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal Jhelum, Mianwali, Sargodha, Khushab, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Jhan, Toba Tek Singh, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Bhakkar, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Kot Adu Sahiwal, Khanewal and Pakpattan, Okara, Bahawalnagar, Khanpur and Rahim Yar Khan from June 16 o June 21.

Balochistan

Rain and thunderstorms are expected in Sibbi, Bolan, Naseerabaad, Jhal Magsi, Mastung, Barkhan, Ziarat, Zhob, Quetta, Kalat, and Khuzdar, Chaman, and Harnai from 17th to 20th June.

KP

In KP; Dir, Chitral, Swat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Swabi, Nowshera, Kurram Kohat Waziristan, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan will receive heavy rainfall from June 15 to June 22.

Sindh

The weather in Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Larkana will remain hot and dry with the potential for dust and storms.
