Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t play Liverpool in the Premier League on Tuesday after his newborn baby died one day earlier.
Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez, who announced last October that they were waiting for twins, declared on Monday that one of the two babies had died.
“The family is more important than anything and Ronaldo supports his loved ones during this extremely difficult time,” United said in a statement on the club’s site prior to the match against Liverpool.
“Therefore, we can confirm that he won’t be in the game against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening and we stress the family’s demand for privacy.”
United are fifth in the Premier League, three points behind fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur, ahead of their trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool.
