Veteran Jurist Scholar and Ex-Senator S.M Zafar Dies After Long Illness

Renowned jurist and former senator S.M. Zafer has passed away in Lahore after a prolonged illness.


Lahore: According to a member of his legal team, Hameed Khalid Butt, S.M. Zafer’s funeral prayer will be offered in Lahore after the Friday prayers.

S.M. Zafer served as the federal Law Minister in the final cabinet of General Ayub Khan at a young age. He also held the position of General Secretary for the Muslim League for many years.

Before announcing his retirement from politics in 2018, the late S.M. Zafer remained associated with the Pakistan Muslim League and served as a senator.

Upon his passing, President Arif Alvi referred to him as a “friend, constitution-maker, and an excellent lawyer.”

President Alvi expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and offered prayers for the departed soul.

Former Ambassador to the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi, also hailed S.M. Zafer as a “distinguished lawyer” and a “principled individual.”

Former MNA Marvi Memon said the lawyer’s death was a loss for Parliament and politics of Pakistan.

PTI leader Hammad Azhar said Zafar was a “kind and gentle soul and full of wisdom”.
