Baby’s head trapped in woman’s womb during surgery in Sindh

A 32-year-old Hindu woman from the Bheel community suffered multiple trauma last week when she had to undergo surgery at a hospital in Tharparkar district to deliver the torso of her dead daughter, and then she was brought to Hyderabad for another operation to remove the baby’s head from her abdomen.

The first surgery took place in Chhachhro and the second at the Liaquat University Hospital in Hyderabad (LUH).

A breech delivery is a delivery during which the baby’s foot(s) leaves the mother first.

The horrific mistake prompted Sindh’s Director-General for Health Services, Dr. Juman Bahoto, to order separate investigations into the two cases.

Dr. Zahid Mahmood will lead a 3-member committee to investigate the case’s mismanagement in particular the absence of a gynecologist and women at the Chhachhro Rural Health Centre (RHC).
