Nawaz’s sentence may be stayed: Rana Sanaullah

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said the three-time Prime Minister and the supremo of the Pakistani Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN), Nawaz Sharif was sentenced and it was possible that they could restore Punjab’s order concerning the conviction.

“The power to suspend the sentence is in the hands of the government and the judiciary,” he told a privately-owned news network. The government is considering suspending Nawaz Sharif’s sentence, he said, adding that the government has the power to commute, reduce or suspend a person’s sentence.

If an innocent man is wrongly convicted, there is a way for the sentence to be suspended and for him to have a chance to go to court in the right way, he added.

In addition, addressing a joint press conference with Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazir Tarar at PMLN’s headquarters in Model Town here on Sunday.

The Minister of the Interior said that the government would not intervene in any way in the cases registered during the incident at Masjid-e-nabvi.

He said that if people wanted to express their feelings in a legal manner, the government could not prevent them from doing so. If someone takes an illegal route, people are entitled to take the legal route against them.

Law Minister Azam Tarar said that clauses of the blasphemy law had not been added to the FIR registered against persons concerning the Masjid-e-Nabvi incident.

“The law allows that if a Pakistani citizen commits an act outside of Pakistan, which is a crime under Pakistani law, that person may be prosecuted anywhere in Pakistan.” He went on to say that the courts could order the dismissal of cases, grant bail, or order an investigation and that the government will do what is in the court orders.

Rana Sanaullah stated that the evidence collected about the incident in Masjid-e-nabvi suggests that it was planned in Pakistan.

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said that after the Masjid-e-nabvi incident, the PM questioned the legal status of the criminal cases registered.

The registration of cases is a provincial matter, he added, adding that if a case is registered in Islamabad, the Ministry of the Interior would look into the case.
